All Transportation Options Compared

Flying vs. Driving to Holbox: Which Is Better?
There isn’t one transportation option that’s right for every traveler. Flying is significantly faster, while traveling by road and ferry is generally more economical and can be easier if you’re carrying a lot of luggage.
Choose a Private Flight If…
A private flight may be the better choice if time is important, you’re traveling as a couple, family or small group, or you’d simply prefer to avoid spending several hours traveling by road.
You arrive directly on Holbox, so there’s no need to transfer from a vehicle to a ferry in Chiquilá.
There’s also the experience itself. Approaching Holbox from the air gives you beautiful views of the coastline, mangroves, shallow turquoise waters and the island before landing at its small airstrip.
Choose a Ground Transfer and Ferry If…
Traveling by road is usually better if budget is your main consideration, you have plenty of time or you’re traveling with more luggage than can comfortably fit in a small aircraft.
A private transfer also gives you door-to-door transportation from your hotel or Cancun Airport to Chiquilá, where you simply continue by ferry.
Neither option is inherently better—the right choice depends on your priorities.
What Happens When You Arrive in Holbox?
One of the best things about arriving in Holbox is how small and relaxed everything feels.
If you arrive by private plane, you’ll land at Holbox Airport, a small island airstrip located close to the center of town. There are no large commercial terminals or long walks through an airport. After leaving the aircraft, a golf-cart taxi can take you and your luggage to your hotel.
If you arrive by ferry, you’ll disembark at the Holbox ferry port. Golf-cart taxis wait around the arrival area and provide transportation to hotels throughout the island.
Many accommodations are only a short ride away, so whichever way you arrive, the final part of your journey is usually quick.
Tips for Traveling to Holbox
A little planning can make getting to Holbox much easier, particularly if you’re connecting directly after an international flight.
Pack Light When Flying
Small private aircraft have different luggage limitations from commercial airliners.
Flights Holbox generally recommends compact, soft-sided luggage whenever possible. Passenger and luggage weight must be considered together, so always provide accurate information when booking your flight.
For larger groups or passengers with significant luggage, additional arrangements may be necessary.
Allow Extra Time After an International Flight
If you’re arriving at Cancun International Airport and connecting to a private flight, don’t schedule the connection too tightly.
You’ll need time to leave the aircraft, pass through immigration, collect your luggage and exit the commercial terminal. You then need to transfer to Cancun’s private aviation area/FBO.
International flights can also be delayed, so allowing a reasonable buffer makes the connection much less stressful.
Consider the Weather
Private flights to Holbox are weather-dependent.
Flights operate during daylight hours and conditions must be suitable for safe operations. Heavy rain, storms, strong winds or poor visibility can sometimes cause delays or changes to flight plans.
Weather can also affect Holbox’s small airstrip, particularly after periods of heavy rainfall.
Remember That Holbox Is Car-Free
Don’t expect to rent a conventional car when you arrive.
Holbox is a small island where visitors generally travel on foot, by bicycle or by golf-cart taxi. Many restaurants, beaches and hotels are within a relatively compact area, which is part of the island’s charm.

Holbox Ferry – How Does It Work?
Two ferry companies operate the route between Chiquilá and Holbox Island: Holbox Express and 9 Hermanos. Both companies offer similar services and charge the same ticket price, but their departure times alternate.
Holbox Express departs every hour at half past the hour (:30), while 9 Hermanos departs every hour on the hour (:00).
This means there is normally a ferry between Chiquilá and Holbox every 30 minutes, making it easy to take the next available ferry when you arrive.
Example: 9 Hermanos at 10:00 AM → Holbox Express at 10:30 AM → 9 Hermanos at 11:00 AM → Holbox Express at 11:30 AM.
Below you can find the ferry schedules, ticket prices and information for each ferry company.
Avoid These 2 Common Ferry Ticket Mistakes
1. Don’t buy your ferry tickets online in advance
2. Don’t buy a round-trip ferry ticket
Why?
Read our complete Holbox Ferry Guide below to learn how it works and avoid unnecessary waiting.
Important Information Before Buying Your Ferry Ticket
We strongly recommend buying your ferry tickets directly at the pier and purchasing one-way tickets only.
Tickets for Holbox Express and 9 Hermanos are not interchangeable. If you buy a ticket in advance and your travel time changes, you may have to wait for the next departure operated by the company you booked with—even if the other ferry is leaving sooner.
We also recommend not buying a round-trip ticket, especially if you are unsure what time you will leave Holbox. A round-trip ticket means you will need to return with the same ferry company and follow their departure schedule.
There is no price advantage to purchasing a round-trip ticket, so keeping your return journey flexible is usually the better option.
Our recommendation: When you arrive in Chiquilá, check which ferry leaves next and buy your ticket at the pier. When leaving Holbox, simply do the same—go to the ferry pier, check the next departure and purchase your ticket there.
This gives you maximum flexibility and less waiting time.
Don’t Feel Pressured to Buy a Round-Trip Ticket
When purchasing your ferry ticket, you may be encouraged to buy a round-trip ticket. Many first-time visitors are not aware that Holbox Express and 9 Hermanos are two separate companies with different departure times.
Our recommendation is simple: buy a one-way ticket only at the pier-not online
First & Last Ferry to Holbox from Chiquilá
The first ferry from Chiquilá to Holbox departs at 6:00 AM, and the last ferry to Holbox departs from Chiquilá at 9:30 PM.
If you are arriving at Cancun International Airport and traveling to Holbox the same day, we recommend leaving Cancun Airport no later than 7:00 PM to have enough time to reach Chiquilá and catch the final ferry.
⚠️ Important for late arrivals: Traffic, road conditions and other unexpected delays can affect travel time. If your flight arrives late in the evening, we recommend allowing plenty of time rather than relying on the last ferry.
First & Last Ferry from Holbox to Chiquilá
The first ferry from Holbox to Chiquilá departs at 5:00 AM, and the last ferry departs at 8:30 PM.
If you have an early-morning flight from Cancun Airport, make sure to allow enough time for your entire journey:
Ferry crossing: approximately 30 minutes
Chiquilá to Cancun Airport: at least 2 hours by road
Airport check-in: most airlines recommend arriving at least 2 hours before departure
For example, if you take the 5:00 AM ferry from Holbox, you can expect to arrive at Cancun Airport at approximately 7:30–8:00 AM at the earliest, depending on traffic and road conditions.
For this reason, we recommend the first ferry only for flights departing Cancun at approximately 10:00 AM or later.
Flying before 10:00 AM?
We strongly recommend leaving Holbox the evening before and staying overnight in Cancun. This gives you sufficient time to reach the airport without the stress or risk of missing your flight.
Our tip: Always allow extra time for ferry schedules, traffic, road conditions and airport check-in, particularly during high season.
Weather Conditions & Ferry Cancellations
Ferry services between Chiquilá and Holbox may occasionally be suspended due to severe weather conditions, including strong winds, heavy rain, rough seas or unusually high tides.
If bad weather is expected, we recommend checking with your hotel or accommodation in Holbox before starting your journey to confirm that the ferry port is open and services are operating normally.
As Holbox is an island, ferry or boat transportation is required to reach or leave the island. If the port is temporarily closed, you may need to adjust your travel plans until conditions improve and maritime authorities allow services to resume.
⚠️ Please note: Private boats are not an alternative during unsafe weather conditions. For safety reasons, private boat transfers also do not operate in severe weather or outside daylight hours.
Our tip: During periods of tropical storms or severe weather, allow extra flexibility in your travel schedule, particularly if you have a flight departing from Cancun Airport.
Holbox Ferry Ticket Prices
As of August 2026, the one-way ferry fares between Chiquilá and Holbox are:
Adults: $330 MXN per person
Children: $200 MXN per child
Both Holbox Express and 9 Hermanos currently charge the same fares.
💡 Our recommendation: Buy a one-way ticket directly at the pier and choose whichever ferry is departing next. There is no price advantage to purchasing a round-trip ticket.
Please note: Go Holbox Transfers is an independent transportation provider and is not responsible for ferry prices, schedules or changes made by the ferry operators. Prices shown on this page are for informational purposes only and may change without notice. Please confirm current fares directly with the ferry operator before traveling.

Request FlightBest Time to Visit Holbox: Weather, Seasons & Travel Tips
With turquoise water, white-sand beaches, incredible wildlife and a relaxed island atmosphere, Holbox is beautiful throughout the year. But depending on what you want to experience, some months may suit your trip better than others.
The best time to visit Holbox depends on whether you’re looking for sunny beach days, fewer crowds, wildlife encounters or lower-season travel. The drier months generally offer more predictable beach weather, while summer brings warmer, more humid conditions and the opportunity to experience Holbox’s famous whale shark season.
Here’s what to expect throughout the year.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Holbox?
For travelers looking for pleasant temperatures and generally drier weather, December through April is one of the most popular periods to visit Holbox.
These months are part of the area’s high season, so the island can also be busier, particularly around Christmas, New Year and Easter.
If wildlife is your priority, summer offers a completely different Holbox experience. The waters around Holbox, Isla Contoy and Cabo Catoche are known for seasonal whale shark encounters, while the surrounding Yum Balam protected area provides important habitat for flamingos, sea turtles and many other species.
There really isn’t one perfect month—the best season depends on what you want from your holiday.
Holbox from December to April: Dry Season
Weather
Winter and early spring are among the most popular times to visit the island. Expect warm tropical weather with generally lower humidity and less rainfall than during the summer months.
Evenings can occasionally feel cooler, particularly when northern weather systems move through the region, but daytime temperatures are typically ideal for enjoying the beach and exploring the island.
Crowds and Prices
The combination of pleasant weather and winter holidays makes this Holbox’s main high season.
Christmas, New Year and Easter can be especially busy, so booking accommodation, activities and transportation in advance is recommended.
If you’re looking for good beach weather and don’t mind sharing the island with more visitors, this is an excellent time to come.
Holbox from May to August: Summer & Wildlife
Summer brings hotter temperatures, higher humidity and an increasing chance of tropical showers—but it also brings one of the area’s most famous natural experiences.
Whale Shark Season
The waters around northern Quintana Roo are an important seasonal habitat for whale sharks, the world’s largest fish. Whale sharks are found in the waters around Holbox, Cabo Catoche, Isla Contoy and Isla Mujeres, making this region internationally known for whale shark encounters.
Summer is the season associated with whale shark tours, although sightings are never guaranteed because these are wild animals.
If swimming with whale sharks is one of the main reasons for your trip, summer may be your favorite time to experience Holbox.
Flamingos and Wildlife
Holbox forms part of the Yum Balam Flora and Fauna Protection Area, an important protected ecosystem of mangroves, wetlands, lagoons and coastal habitats.
The region is home to an impressive variety of wildlife, including American flamingos, sea turtles, crocodiles and numerous resident and migratory bird species.
Wildlife sightings vary throughout the year and can never be guaranteed, but nature lovers will find plenty to discover beyond Holbox’s beaches.
Holbox from September to November: Quieter & Wetter
September and October fall within the wetter part of the year and also within the Atlantic hurricane season.
That doesn’t mean it rains all day, every day. Tropical weather can change quickly, and sunny periods can alternate with heavy showers or thunderstorms.
One advantage is that the island can feel quieter than during the winter high season.
However, travelers visiting during this period should keep their plans flexible. Tropical storms and heavy rainfall can affect boat tours, ferry services, roads and private flights.
By November, conditions generally begin transitioning toward the drier winter season.
What Is the Cheapest Time to Visit Holbox?
If you’re looking for better-value accommodation, traveling outside the main winter holidays and other peak periods can be worth considering.
The quieter months may bring more attractive hotel rates and fewer visitors, but you’re also accepting a greater possibility of rain and changing weather.
Rather than choosing purely by price, think about what’s most important for your trip: weather, wildlife, crowds or budget.
Best Time to Visit Holbox for Good Weather
For travelers primarily interested in relaxing on the beach, walking around the island and enjoying outdoor activities, the drier winter and early spring months are generally the safest choice.
December through April is popular for exactly this reason.
However, Holbox has a tropical climate, so even during the drier season a rain shower is always possible.
Best Time to Visit Holbox for Wildlife
If wildlife is your priority, summer is particularly interesting because of whale shark season.
Holbox and the surrounding Yum Balam protected area are also home to an extraordinary variety of birds and marine life throughout the year.
Remember that wildlife is wild. Seasons can improve your chances of seeing particular animals, but sightings should never be considered guaranteed.
Best Time to Visit Holbox for Fewer Crowds
Avoiding major holiday periods can make a significant difference.
Christmas, New Year and Easter are particularly popular, while parts of the rainy season tend to be quieter.
The shoulder periods between high and low season can offer a nice compromise between visitor numbers and weather conditions.
Flying to Holbox During the Rainy Season
Weather is particularly important if you’re planning to arrive by private aircraft.
Flights to Holbox operate during daylight hours and suitable weather conditions. Heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds or poor visibility can occasionally delay or affect flights.
Holbox also has a small island airstrip rather than a large paved international airport, so periods of particularly heavy rainfall can affect local operating conditions.
If you’re traveling during the wetter months, keeping some flexibility in your schedule is always a good idea.
Holbox Month by Month
January: Pleasant weather, popular high-season month
February: Generally dry and comfortable
March: Warm weather and popular for beach trips
April: Hotter, with busy Easter periods possible

So, When Should You Visit Holbox?
There is no single best time for everyone.
Choose winter and early spring if your priority is generally drier beach weather. Consider summer if experiencing whale shark season and the area’s wildlife is high on your list. The quieter, wetter months may appeal if you prefer fewer visitors and greater flexibility with your travel dates.
Whenever you visit, Holbox offers something special—from its beaches and spectacular sunsets to the mangroves, wildlife and relaxed island lifestyle.

Where Do Cancun to Holbox Flights Depart?
Private flights depart from the FBO/private aviation area at Cancun International Airport, which is separate from the regular commercial terminals.

Small private aircraft have stricter weight and luggage limitations than commercial aircraft. Passenger and luggage weight must be considered together, so accurate information should be provided when booking.

Road journey → unloading luggage → ferry waiting time → ferry crossing → golf-cart taxi
Flying eliminates the road journey and ferry connection. Once your private flight lands, you’re already on Holbox.
For travelers with limited vacation time, this can save several hours.
Which Is Cheaper?
Traveling by road and ferry is the more economical option.
A private flight is a premium service and therefore costs considerably more than taking public transportation or a private transfer followed by the ferry.
However, a private aircraft can accommodate up to five passengers, so families and groups can divide the aircraft cost between several travelers.
If budget is your main priority, choose road transportation and ferry. If time and convenience are more important, flying has a clear advantage.
Which Option Is More Comfortable?
That depends on what you consider comfortable.
A private flight avoids several hours on the road and eliminates the need to move luggage between a vehicle, ferry and golf-cart taxi. You also have the aircraft privately for your group.
However, small aircraft have limited luggage capacity, and flights are weather-dependent.
Road transportation takes longer but allows greater luggage flexibility and may be preferable for travelers who don’t enjoy flying in small aircraft.
What If Your Flight into Cancun Is Delayed?
If you’re connecting to Holbox after an international flight, allow enough time between your scheduled arrival and private flight departure.
You’ll need to pass through immigration, collect your luggage and exit the commercial terminal before transferring to Cancun’s private aviation area.
Private flights to Holbox operate during daylight hours and are subject to weather conditions. A significant delay on a late-afternoon arrival can therefore affect whether you can still fly that day.
If your international flight arrives late, traveling by road or flying the following morning may be necessary.
Flight vs Ferry with Children
For families, both options have advantages.
Flying can reduce a long transfer day to a short flight, which can be particularly convenient when traveling with young children.
On the other hand, families carrying large suitcases, strollers and other equipment may appreciate the greater luggage flexibility of a private ground transfer.
Flight vs Ferry with Lots of Luggage
If you’re traveling with several large suitcases or bulky equipment, road transportation and ferry may be the more practical option.
Small aircraft have strict weight limitations for safety reasons. Travelers flying to Holbox should provide passenger and luggage details before departure so capacity can be confirmed.
Flight vs Ferry: Which Should You Choose?
Choose a Private Flight If…
Flying is a great choice if you value time, privacy and convenience. It’s particularly attractive for couples, families and small groups who want to arrive directly on Holbox and avoid several hours of ground transportation.
The aerial views and unique island landing also make the journey part of the Holbox experience.
Choose the Ferry If…
Choose the road-and-ferry option if budget is more important than travel time, you’re carrying a lot of luggage or simply prefer traveling by road.
It’s slower, but it’s a practical and economical way to reach the island.
Ultimately, neither option is right for everyone. Your choice depends on your budget, schedule, luggage and travel preferences.
